On a glorious May afternoon at Footes Lane, the R G Falla Hockey Outreach Tournament brought to a climax the coaching scheme for Junior Schools in the Island.
The Tournament, held on the 27th May, proved to be a great success and an enjoyable occasion for not only the 10 school teams but also many Parents, families and friends. Starting in September 2015, around 1,000 children have had access to cover coaching blocks in all the schools during the programme, which allowed boys and girls of mixed ability to develop their skills in a safe environment.
A week before the Tournament a number of year 5 pupils took part in a ‘Taster’ session at Footes Lane.
The Outreach Tournament had ten teams, dressed in coloured t shirts supplied by R G Falla, in two groups playing on a round-robin basis. The play was very close between all of the teams and was well umpired by Laura Cashin, a Ladies 1st xl player, Will Thompson, a young Hockey player of great potential and Jay Piset, an England Under 16 player.
Eventually the two teams of La Houguette played for the 3 v 4th place.
The final, between La Mare de Carteret Tigers and Vale School was again closely fought, with La Mare retaining their title with a 2-0 win.
During the event an England Veterans Ladies player Jayne Carter, talked of opportunities to the assembled players and crowd, and showed her medal for the England over SS’s gained whilst playing in Australia.
The Trophies were presented by Mark Thompson, the Director of Guernsey Junior Hockey and Mr Dean Winsall, the Commercial Director of R G Falla. With Guernsey men having won the EHA Trophy and Guernsey man Andy Whalley is the England Men’s over 40 Captain, the pathway and heritage of hockey is there for everyone to see!
